What is Zumba?

Zumba is an exciting, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness exercise programme that has taken the world by storm with its hypnotic fusion of Latin rhythms and dance and fitness moves.

Zumba draws its inspiration from Latin and international dance styles such as Cumbia, Reggaeton, Mambo, Soca, Flamenco and Hip Hop, as well as fitness moves such as lunges, bicep curls and belly dance moves. There is a lot of wiggling, shaking, shimmying and laughing too - making Zumba a truly joyful and exhilerating fitness experience.

Zumba was founded by the celebrity fitness trainer Beto Perez, who stumbled upon the concept of Zumba in Columbia during the mid 1990's. Today, Zumba is one of the most popular forms of exercise programmes in the world, with millions of people from around the world taking part in classes every week. Why not join a Zumba class today?


Q: Do I need to book my place in advance?

A: It is strongly recommended that you check availability before turning up because some classes are quite full already. You will also need to complete a booking/medical screening form before joining a class, which can be emailed to you beforehand.

Q: What do I need to bring to a class?

​A: Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing so that you can move around freely. You should also wear a pair of supportive trainers or dance trainers. Bring a bottle of water as you will need it!

​Q: I am overweight/unfit/have dodgy knees/have no coordination.

​A: My classes are suitable for all ages, shapes and fitness levels. I have students aged 16 to 70 with various levels of fitness and strength! All of the dance moves can be modified to suit your needs. The focus is on having fun and enjoying the class! I encourage everyone to go at their own pace and to take it gradually. I usually find that within a few weeks most people have become familiar with the dance steps and music.

​Q: How much is a class?

A: The classes are £6.00 drop-in or £5.00 per session when paid termly. 

Q: Will Zumba help me to lose weight?

A: Definitely! In a typical Zumba class you will burn 400-1000 calories an hour depending on how much energy you put in. Zumba uses the whole body and gets you hot and sweaty, helping you to burn the pounds around your legs, arms, bottom and waist!​​
